I think DVRs were made for the Oscars. Seriously, there is no reason to put up with the bloat if you can just speed through and just watch the awards and Stewart.

As for the awards? Really, who cares anymore? They're not about what's the best film of the year (Batman Begins!), they're about Hollywood making itself far more important than it really is. I liked Clooney's speech because it (unintentionally) summed up the Oscars.

I think I watched out of some obligatory sense of nostalgia for a time when I thought it mattered (perhaps coinciding with a time when I really desired a statue of my own). I think, perhaps, that next year I'll watch Finding Nemo or some other fine family fare with my son on Oscar night. He'll be 1 1/2..I don't think he'll care too much about this strange CineSport.

'Who cares?'
Well, after a recent poll (exhaustive and completely unbiased) that we posted on our site, we have discovered that the majority of people actually care more about Paris Hilton's Lame Dog than they do about the Academy Awards. However, I'm not sure that's reassurring...

Giving the Awards the benefit of the doubt (or just playing Devil's Advocate), I would say that they sincerely TRY to pick what they think people will later understand as The Best Picture, Performance, Eye Shadow, etc. Since it is all a big industry, I don't think that the nominations or the winners are ever picked solely for their artistic merits, mainly because of their (sometimes fairly acurrate) perception that the movie-going public in this country has no taste. Therefore, they have to convince people what is 'great'.

All in all, I think the Awards are just another Big Show - to be reviewed and criticised. Whether I find it all entertaining/worth my time depends on my tolerance for such overt nacissism.
