You're right. As perhaps my favorite movie of all time, I am consistently amazed at how prescient Chayefsky was in his rendering of UBS, the fourth network, and his indictment of television in general. Not to spoil anything for those who take the excellent advice of watching it, but there is a scene where one character tells another,

"You are television incarnate... indifferent to suffering, insensitive to joy. All of life is reduced to the common rubble of banality. War, murder, death are all the same to you as bottles of beer. The daily business of life is a corrupt comedy...You are madness, virulent madness, and everything you touch dies with you."

The quotes go on and on. Several years ago, they were planning Network as, yes, a network television series, with Larry Gelbart producing and Jamie Lee Curtis in the Faye Dunaway role. It never went anywhere, thank God, but I'd love to see the pilot, if anyone out there has it.

A nice little piece of Network trivia: I once saw a film still from a scene that wasn't used in the movie. Faye Dunaway, as network programming exec Diana Christenson, is standing in front of a schedule board with all the networks' programs, including those for UBS. One of the UBS programs never mentioned in the script? Celebrity Mah-Jong. Pick up the pink courtesy phone, Bravo, we have a call for you.
